World Music & Jazz Society

The World Music & Jazz Society is a not-for-profit grassroots organization based in Murphy, North Carolina and serves the surrounding counties of Far Western North Carolina and North Georgia.  Founded in 1997 by local musicians and jazz enthusiasts, its purpose is to increase public interest in the jazz and world music idioms and to offer live performances in a variety of regional venues.

Membership has grown steadily since its inception and includes loyal jazz fans from Florida to Pennsylvania in addition to several hundred locally. We continue to be staffed entirely by volunteers and are always seeking energetic workers to assist with activities and planning. Promoting enhanced music interest among young people is a key annual emphasis. Each year WMJS provides a number of full scholarships for gifted local students to attend intensive summer workshops in jazz and classical music. To date, WMJS has enabled more than 45 regional students to pursue advanced music studies with outstanding educators in Kentucky, Colorado, New Jersey, and Tennessee as well as our home state of North Carolina
